Moissanite does not discolour and does not fade. When it looks dull it is almost always a thin film on the surface — and five minutes at home takes it off.
Why a stone goes dull
Oil from skin, soap residue and lotion collect underneath the stone. That is exactly where light is supposed to enter and bounce back out, so even a thin film cuts the sparkle immediately.
This is not damage. The stone is fine; only its surface needs attention.
Cleaning it at home
Five minutes, with what is already in the house:
- Soak in warm water with a little dish soap for about ten minutes.
- Brush gently with the softest toothbrush you own, especially underneath the stone.
- Rinse in clean water. Close the drain first.
- Dry with a soft lint-free cloth and let it dry fully before putting it away.
What should never touch it
S925 silver reacts with sulphur in the air and darkens. That is normal and reversible, but far easier to prevent than to undo.
- Pool chlorine and bleach — the fastest way to darken silver.
- Household cleaners, including the gentle ones.
- Perfume and hairspray sprayed onto jewelry. Put jewelry on last, once everything else is dry.
- Seawater and hot sulphur springs.
When to take it off
Before swimming, exercising, cleaning the house, and sleeping. Not because the stone is fragile, but because the knocks that loosen a claw almost always happen during those.
A ring with a loose claw eventually loses its stone, and that is the one kind of damage cleaning cannot fix.
Storing it
Separately, one piece per small sealable bag. Less air means silver darkens more slowly, and pieces that cannot rub together cannot scratch each other.
